Who doesn’t love Mardi Gras! This is one of our most popular events each year and we don’t charge more than our normal fee but all patrons are subject to admission. We are doing a balloon drop, handing out beads and it’s a great time with family and friends.
“The origins of Mardi Gras can be traced to medieval Europe, passing through Rome and Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries to the French House of the Bourbons. From here, the traditional revelry of “Boeuf Gras,” or fatted calf, followed France to her colonies. Learn more at ” www.mardigrasneworleans.com”
Here’s the details on the party and hope to see you there!
Yes, roller skating is a wonderful social activity for young and old and almost anyone can learn to roller skate with a few classes and/or lessons. But the true value of roller skating is within you. Whether you are looking to meet new friends, provide family fun for your kids or get in shape for the new year, roller skating at Orbit Skate Center in Palatine IL has a public skate or class for you.
When you roller skate you affect almost every area of your body:
- Mentally, you are reducing stress and releasing endorphins that provide enjoyment.
- Musically, you can’t help but sing along, bouncing and leaning into the beat that helps you focus on something other than your feet which actually helps you roller skate better.
- Physically, roller skating provides a fantastic way to burn up to 600 calories per hours and uses over 80% of your body’s muscles, toning and strengthening for that lean strong body.
- Socially, roller skating and participating in public skating sessions at a roller rink can open your eyes to new friends that share a common interest. Skaters are unique, welcoming and you could find yourself in an entirely new social network!
Roller skating can be enjoyed all year-long at your local roller rink. When the weather is too hot, too cold, too rainy or too whatever, you can always find a place indoors to roller skate.

For those that love roller skating, not only from our childhoods but the future of roller skating a new book is published called Chicago Rink Rats by Tom Russo.
Chicago has always been a haven for some of the greatest roller rinks in the country, considered by many to be the Roller Capital of the United States. This new book describes a fascinating account of some of the best rinks that are gone but never forgotten. Judging by the number of people that come to Orbit Skate Center and stand in front of our museum display, there’s plenty of people young and old that are interested in where roller skating came from and why it continues to be an enduring sport for people of all ages.
My personal experience with Tom Russo was speaking with him in front of the the museum display at Orbit Skate Center that features skates, plates, wheels, skate cases, apparel, stickers and other memorabilia that has been displayed in the cabinet for many years. I’ve accumulated quite a lot of roller skating history and love when people learn more about the sport or tell me memories they have of the various rinks like The Hub, Fireside, The Axle, Rainbo, New Planet, North Ave just to name a few. Tom expressed an interest in a large photo of the 202nd Armory in Chicago during WW2 that is now a photo in the book that depicts a huge space with lots of people in suits and long dresses along with a wedding happening in the rink when the photo was taken. You just never know who you will meet at a roller rink and our friendship developed as I listened to his stories and experienced his excitement about his upcoming book. – Sandra Levin, Orbit Skate Center
