You and your family is invited to the After School Club Open House on Monday, May 23rd from 6pm – 8pm. Come see why this program is helping children grades K – 8th get better grades, learn important social skills, learn to roller skate and participate in other interactive games. Our children enjoy free play time both inside and outside our facility when it is not open to the public. Find out why our parents rave about the program and the kids race for the bus to get to the After School Club at Orbit Skate Center. We provide transportation from many CCSD 15 schools and drop off options are also available from any district. We even have home schooled children who love spending the afternoon with their friends. The After School Club is a community based not for profit program providing needed services to families in our area. Check out our flyer and we hope to see you and your family for the Open House! Enrollment is open anytime, space is limited and if you register before 6/1/16 you can save $25 off the annual family registration fee.
Our first year hosting the After School Club has been a very fun time! We are so proud of our children in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade here in District 15 as well as St. Thomas of Villanova in Palatine and St. James in Arlington Heights. What started out as 3 schools near the rink has expanded to more than 8! We currently provide transportation to Winston Campus, Hunting Ridge, Jane Addams, Lincoln Elementary, Kimball Hill, Marion Jordan, Lake Louise, Pleasant Hill, St. Thomas of Villanova and St James in Arlington Heights. Children attending schools that we do not provide transportation for are also welcome, if parents can make arrangements to get their children to the facility.
The children enrolled in our program have experienced great report cards, our mentors work really hard with them for the 1st hour to get all their homework done. Of course, having a nutritious snack helps little brains work extra hard! Once their homework is finished it’s time to play! We offered a range of games and toys out on the skating floor, encouraging the kids to play with the other children even if their ages are different because we believe in teaching kindness and cooperation among all our Club Members. Our games and activities are non-competitive and our adults on hand are out on the floor supervising. Some of our children make up their own games using our huge bouncy balls and plastic cones. We occasionally have snowball fights with 250 cotton snowballs and have pop-up tents for the kids to hide and form teams! At any given time, the kids are skating, dancing, running and jumping rope. We don’t have any ‘high tech’ games like electronics because we want our kids to be active and get fit.
We are now on the preferred provider list for District 15 and proud of the program we’ve worked so hard to put together. For next school year 2015/16 we are adding Early Care to help parents that need help in the early morning and will transport the children to their schools in our shiny new bus that is in the process of being painted with outer space murals to compliment our space theme for Orbit Skate Center. Early care will start as early as our enrolled families need, even at 6am for a nominal additional fee either on a full or part time basis.
We are expecting a larger enrollment for the next school year, families can register their children now for an annual fee of $50 per family to hold their spots. Monthly billing makes paying tuition online or at the rink very affordable. If you need before or after school care, stop by the rink and check out this wonderful program!
When you think of a roller rink, what comes to mind? Old music, old skates, old people? Not at Orbit Skate Center here in Palatine Illinois. Orbit has been the premier roller skating facility in the northwest suburbs of Chicago for more than 2 decades. Owned and operated by the same family since 1992, the rink has been constantly upgraded and updated to keep roller skating fresh and new. Orbit Skate Center is a space themed facility with 40 foot murals on the end walls, 3D black light party rooms for Glo Crazy Parties and equipped with the Cosmic Cafe and Galaxy SkyBar to create an experience for all ages and levels of enjoyment. We have hosted weddings, school reunions, bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah celebrations, quinceanera parties, corporate parties that are out of this world fun for everyone.
Our events are centered around roller skating with a twist. Winter events include family parties like New Years Eve and Mardi Gras with balloon drops that are attended by hundreds of people each year. Summer events like the 4th of July are enjoyed by our Parade Crew of about 150 skaters that love to skate the Arlington Heights and Palatine parades with us. This year we have a huge party on July 4th that starts at Midnight until 6am with adults from all over the country bringing some of the best R&B and JB skating to Orbit for one amazing night.
Our upscale food is another area you don’t expect at any ordinary roller rink. We have a full menu of delicious fresh food to offer our guests that can be viewed on our website. From the pizza to milkshakes, everything is prepared on site and as natural as we can with no preservatives and using the freshest ingredients like our crazy lineup of pizza toppings. We don’t serve anything we wouldn’t offer to our own children and grandchildren. The bar appetizers like toasted nacho cheese ravioli is a big hit!
Community is very important to us. Our families that have their children in our After School Club trust us to provide a welcoming and wholesome environment. We reach out to our local schools, offering incentives to do better in reading with our Reading Rocks program, learn physics with our Newton Knew IT! program and raise money using our new FUNdraising skating parties. During the school breaks of Winter, Spring and Summer we provide over 100,000 free passes to school children to skate free when school is out of session. We are one of the first rinks in the Chicago area to participate in KidsSkateFree.com, a nationwide initiative to fight childhood obesity by sending member families 2 free skate passes each week for their children until they are 14 years old. With over 6,000 kids enrolled at Orbit Skate Center and approaching half a million kids nationwide, we believe we are making a difference in ways that matter!
Lately, there’s been an article in Reuters.com recently about the demise of roller rinks and citing that it’s a difficult business to keep going and showing an image of really bad rental skates that we would never provide to our guests. While this may be true for some roller rinks in some areas, at Orbit Skate Center we have seen an upwards trend of new skaters, corporate and birthday parties and the desire for families to spend time together doing something that appeals to the entire family. Our challenges are not that roller skating is on the decline but the costs of doing business, from property taxes to increased minimum wages and increased regulations make staying in any kind of small business a challenge. We personally feel that in order for roller rinks to survive and thrive, they must keep up with the times and invest in their own facilities to make roller skating a sport that will continue for many generations to come.
