National Roller Skating Month’s Newest Campaign Wants You to “Show Your Moves” This October
Indianapolis, IN (July 20, 2016) – The Roller Skating Association International encourages kids to become physically fit and active 365 days a year. This year’s theme is encouraging kids to get active and show their moves in the rink. #mysk8moves is a movement aimed at reminding kids that a healthy lifestyle and physical fitness can still be fun. This October member skating rinks will be hosting month-long events celebrating the health benefits and entertainment that roller skating provides while highlighting all the fun that can be had.
America’s favorite pastime, roller skating, is a way to show your individuality in the form of movement. Are you a jam skater? Shuffle skater? Speed Skater? What are your moves? Roller Skating gives kids the opportunity to socialize, get active, and have fun in a safe environment.
The RSA wants people to know that roller skating is one of the few activities that provides a complete aerobic workout for over 640 of the body’s muscles – especially the heart. Families, kids, and teens are encouraged to dedicate themselves to achieving an active lifestyle. To find your nearest skating rink, please go to www.rollerskating.org and click on Locator.
Roller Skating has long held the support of The President’s Challenge Program and Let’s Move Program with the mission of keeping kids active and healthy in a safe environment. The President’s Challenge is a program that encourages all Americans to make being active an important part of their everyday lives. No matter what your activity or fitness level, The President’s Challenge Program can help motivate you to improve. National Roller Skating Month is every October, proclaimed by President Reagan in 1982 roller skating endorsed by the American Heart Association and the President’s Council on Fitness as a great way to get in shape and have fun doing it. Roller Skating has so many good things to offer people of all ages. It is a social activity and promotes a healthy lifestyle. Unlike gyms, roller skating brings people together doing something they enjoy. Using 80% of the bodies muscles, roller skating is a low impact all over toning calorie burning monster! Keep moving and you can burn up to 600 calories per hour, not only that but it’s the only sport you can burn calories standing still because being on roller skates takes balance. The entire time you are standing on roller skates your body is going through subtle balancing movements to keep you upright.
Orbit Skate Center is a member of the Roller Skating Association and has been for 42 years. The theme of National Roller Skating Month 2015 is from the Rink to the Rings featuring Chad Hedrick, 52x World Champion Inline Speed Skating Champion and 5x Olympic Medalist. He is the most winning speed skate of all time and he started out roller skating! His father owned roller rinks in Texas and Chad started skating as a child. Many of today’s Olympians started out roller skating. The balance and coordination you learn when you roller skate enhances every other sport from baseball to football.
Watch for our specials this month celebrating National Roller Skating Month, use the hashtag #NRSM and show us your roller skating photos taken this month at Orbit Skate Center or your local skating rink!
Back in 1982, President Reagan proclaimed every October as National Roller Skating Month for the United States. Roller Skating is an American tradition and has provided generations of children and adults with a healthy activity that burns up to 500 calories an hour while using almost 80% of the body’s muscles. Roller Skating has undergone many changes over the years that has kept it fresh, forward and engaging. Unlike some other sports that are more targeted to the younger ages, roller skating is enjoyed by people of all ages. Our students at Orbit Skate Center start as young as 18 months and we have skaters that are over 80 years of age.
Roller skating has many faces, from inline skates to traditional roller skates and the skates themselves vary as much as the skaters who love them. For those that like to skate fast there are 5 wheel inline racing skates, and many skaters race outdoors in marathon races. Indoor skating includes roller derby, jam skating, R&B skating, dance and freestyle artistic skating. To become a proficient skater takes time and practice. Taking classes and skating sessions is a great way to boost your skill level and the better skater you are, the more you will enjoy skating. Making sure you have skates that suit your style of skating and level of skating is an important factor in your level of enjoyment.
Today, roller skating is in the news almost daily. Stories of Roller Derby teams around the world including a new league in Shanghai, Speed Skating medal winners around the world that participate in the World Games and Pan American Games each year keep roller skating in the public eye.
Gather your friends and family and head on out to your local roller skating facility and find out how much fun it is to get rolling.
